Stock Photography FAQ

What is a stock image?
To put it simply a stock image is a photograph or vector image that you pay the photographer/creator a fee to license and use. The creator still retains the rights to the image and people other than yourself will be able to use it (you might notice you see the same images come up a lot in different companies advertising campaigns or websites), you are essentially paying a one-time rental fee for the image.

Can’t I just use images off of Google Image Search?
You can, but if you are using copyrighted material without paying for fair use of it you could get in big trouble and be subject to legal action. It is a serious offense to steal photographs and vector images, these designers and photographers make their living doing this and you are harming them by using their images without paying. If you really don’t want to spend money on stock photography then you can use a service like Free Images, but you will have a limited selection of images and they might not be of the quality you need.

What is the difference between royalty-free and rights-managed stock images?
If an image is royalty-free that means that you pay a one-time fee to license the image for use and after that you can use it as many times as you like without having to pay anything further. A rights-managed image has restrictions on what you can use it for, for example the image owner may set restrictions based on inudstries, length of time, and the locations that the image can be used for. From my experience the vast majority of stock images are royalty-free, but make sure you know which kind you are purchasing so that you don’t run into trouble if you actually have a rights-managed image and you want to use it for something that violates it’s usage rules.

Who should use stock images?
If you run a blog it’s a great idea to include a featured image along with your articles, and unless you’re also a photographer you probably won’t have a lot of images lying around that you can use. Stock photos are also an inexpensive way to get images for any of your print marketing material. That being said, you shouldn’t just use images for the sake of adding some visual interest, make sure that they actually relate to your content. Adding text or cropping the images can be really helpful as well, you don’t necessarily need Photoshop to do that. I recommend looking into Gimpshop, and open-source alternative to Photoshop that you can download and install for free.

Pros & Cons of Stock Photography
Well the pros are quite simple: stock photography is inexpensive, you have a wide variety of photos on every topic you could possibly imagine, and it’s all instantly downloadable. One downside is that you run the risk of looking like all the other people that are using the image you purchased. If your company is about being creative or unique then stock photography may not be the best option for you, unless you are really good at graphics editing. Large advertising agencies prefer to do their own photoshoots, but if you are a small business or a blogger then that might just not be in the budget for you! In that case, stock photography is an excellent alternative.

Fotolia Collections

Instant Collection
In October of 2019 Fotolia launched an app for iOS called the Instant App, which allowed users to become image publishers for Fotolia using pictures they had taken on their phone (they are still required to meet Fotolia’s quality standards). A lot of the images in the Instant Collection are actually quite good, with a more spontaneous and fresh feel to them. Over 50,000 images have been sold from the Instant Collection to date.

TEN Collection
The TEN Collection is a special project by Fotolia that brings Fotolia photographers and featured designers together for collaborations. The finished collaborations are made available for download through the Fotolia website for a fee, and you can watch videos on how the photographers and the designers created the images. Some of them are pretty cool! The name ‘TEN Collection’ comes from the concept behind the show which has 10 designers creating images based on 10 different themes using only stock photography that can be found on the Fotolia website.
