The “Let Yourself Go” Challenge!

Recently, one of our contributors, Holly Wilson (grooovygirl), posted a truly inspiring article titled She’s Let Herself Go? (a must read) about how women, and men, get so caught up in their physical appearance to the point where a woman can’t bear the thought of being seen without make-up on, or a man dare not go shirtless in the summer unless he’s sporting a buff six-pack. In the article, Holly states:

“If you’re up for the challenge (or just sick to death of all this self-loathing nonsense), try going make-up free for a day.”

This simple statement inspired me to start this challenge!

She’s Let Herself Go?

I overheard a conversation recently between two female friends of mine that got me thinking: What does it mean to let yourself go? They were critiquing the appearance of another friend of ours who recently abandoned using make-up and dressy clothing for a more natural look. One friend observed, “She’s always wearing baggy T-shirts and doesn’t bother to wear make-up anymore. It’s like she doesn’t care about what she looks like.” And then the dreaded words: “She’s let herself go.” An image came to mind of the friend they were talking about. Yes, her appearance wasn’t business-like anymore. But my overall impression what that she seemed happy. Her face glowed with contentment, her eyes sparkled, and her clothes were more practical. And, she seemed carefree and confident—not unattractive.

Mmmm….lipstick. Doesn’t that sound appetizing? You may be shocked to know that the average woman may ingest between 4 to 9 lbs of lipstick in her lifetime. What an astounding and disgusting fact! That could add up to over 1000 tubes of the stuff!

Is Your Toothpaste Killing You?

Okay, so I’m not suggesting that your tube of white goo and toothbrush are plotting your slow demise. Just consider what that goo might consist of. Most all toothpaste contains fluoride along with a host of other chemicals that are definitely not good for you. Considering that anything you put in your mouth is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, it troubles me that the chemicals in toothpaste could be compounding in my body on a daily basis. Fluoride is a dangerous chemical and can have devastating effects on the body’s organs. Do a little research into this and you’ll be stunned at what you’ll learn.
