She’s Let Herself Go?

I overheard a conversation recently between two female friends of mine that got me thinking: What does it mean to let yourself go? They were critiquing the appearance of another friend of ours who recently abandoned using make-up and dressy clothing for a more natural look. One friend observed, “She’s always wearing baggy T-shirts and doesn’t bother to wear make-up anymore. It’s like she doesn’t care about what she looks like.” And then the dreaded words: “She’s let herself go.” An image came to mind of the friend they were talking about. Yes, her appearance wasn’t business-like anymore. But my overall impression what that she seemed happy. Her face glowed with contentment, her eyes sparkled, and her clothes were more practical. And, she seemed carefree and confident—not unattractive.
