40th Anniversary of Earth Day

April 22, 1970 was the world’s first Earth Day. This year, Thursday, April 22, 2010 is the 40th Anniversary! From its simple beginnings of gatherings in community centres and school class rooms throughout small towns and cities in the U.S. where the public could learn about the threats to our environment to a now global awareness with celebrations and educational events worldwide.
It’s encouraging to know that the environmental threats discussed forty years ago have mostly been resolved. Detergents containing phosphates have been banned. The pesticide DDT was banned in the U.S. in 1972 then worldwide under the Stockholm Convention. Lead in gasoline has been banned. The control of ozone-depleting substances, such as CFCs has been implemented. Acid rain has largely been eliminated and Lake Erie, once proclaimed to be “dead” is alive once again.
Participate and Educate
Today, the greatest concern about our environment is global warming. If you want to help preserve our planet earth and provide a clean, healthy environment for your children to grow up in, consider participating in a local Earth Day event in your community. Learn how you can do small things in your everyday life that can have a huge impact on the environment. From such simple things as changing your incandescent bulbs in your home to more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, to planting a tree. Learn more.
Here’s a list of just some of the earth day events happening in communities across Ontario.
